A large range of outbuildings at the rear of the Listed shop were not required for storage and the Client wanted to make use of them as small shops with flats above. There was no direct access from the High Street at the front so a way was devised to form a passage through the middle of the shop. This allowed for one large shop and one small shop at the front which suited the Client. The buildings at the rear were not ideal for conversion due to restricted head heights. The Planning Authority wanted offices at first floor level as they did not believe it was possible to have flats which would meet both the Historic Building requirements and the Building Regulations. In the end they had to accept the Client’s request and our scheme.
